30/50/70: Study Method from A (Retiring) Procrastinator

When I ran my BlkWmnScholar page, I created my version of the Pomodoro Method, the 48/70 method. This method gained popularity among students and was an extremely successful tool in helping me achieve my 4.0 in the Fall semester! However, after releasing myself from the page, my studying methods decreased, and my procrastination started rising again. With a mix of negative personal experiences, a lack of discipline, and a lack of inspiration, I ended up with a C in one of my classes.

Now, although Cs get degrees (and the C is in a class that is not required for my major), I have learned to give myself grace with this class and reboot my study methods to be more suitable to my current circumstances. So, without further ado, I present the 30/50/70 method.

What is the 30/50/70 Method?

The 30/50/70 method is similar to the 48/70 method but provides a section for those who want to incorporate a quick study session into their regime. With the 30/50/70 method, you have three options:

30 Method: 25-minute study session + 5-minute break → Use this method for general/weekend reviews or if you have a lot of topics/subjects to review for the day. Repeat this method three times before taking a 10-15 minute break and restarting.

50 Method: 40-minute study session + 10-minute break → Use this method for weekday studying and your main topics/subjects. Repeat this method twice before taking a 10-15 minute break and restarting.

70 Method: 60-minute study session + 10-minute break → Use this method for exam reviews and heavier topics/subjects. Repeat this method twice before taking a 20-25-minute break and restarting.

What Else Can I do during my study sessions?

Let’s admit it —studying is mentally draining. After your study sessions, I encourage you to take some time for yourself, take walks or sit outside in the sunlight, journal, or even talk with your friends and family for encouragement. I try not to use social media or my phone during my studying sessions as it can prompt doom scrolling (significant social media or general media consumption for long periods), making it harder to return to studying. Also, make sure you stay hydrated while you study and, more importantly, STRETCH!!

Finals Season

With finals approaching, you must use your time wisely when studying. However, when you’re studying, do not overwork or cram your material to the point of burnout or exhaustion. With the 30/50/70 method, choose the time frame(s) that work for you and mix it up to your liking. And most importantly, remember that your grades do not determine your intellect. I wish you all the best of luck!

I am so glad you made this available. I’ve been trying to figure how to break up my work in increments for productivity. I am a huge procrastinator and I needed this for tonight lol.
